Wedding weather on the Costa Tropical, month by month

Sun most of the year, but not all months are equal for a wedding. Here is what each season really brings on the coast around La Herradura, Almuñécar, Salobreña and Nerja.

The short version

Summers are hot and almost completely dry. Most of the year’s rain falls between October and April, and even then on only a few days a month. The Sierra Nevada shelters this coast from the north, which is why avocados and mangoes grow here and winters stay mild.

Which season for which wedding

  • May and June — warm, green, long days and almost no rain. June evenings are perfect for an outdoor dinner. The sea is still fresh for swimming.
  • July and August — reliably dry but hot, and the busiest weeks of the year on the beaches and roads. Plan the ceremony for late afternoon, give guests shade and water, and book everything early.
  • September and October — my favourite. The sea is at its warmest, the heat eases, the crowds thin out after the first week or two of September, and the light turns golden earlier in the evening. Our own wedding was in early September.
  • November to April — mild days and quiet villages, good for small weddings and elopements. Days are short and a rainy day is possible, so have an indoor or covered plan B.

Wind

Most afternoons bring a gentle sea breeze. On some days a stronger easterly (levante) or westerly (poniente) blows, so weigh down arches, flowers and anything light, and keep hair and veils in mind.

Planning around the weather

  • In summer, start the ceremony after about 18:00 and put the couple portraits in the golden hour — see sunset times by month and a wedding day timeline that works for photos.
  • From November to April, ask your venue what happens if it rains: a terrace with a cover, a room with a view, or a later time.
  • Whatever the month, sunset rather than midday gives the best photographs.
